Donacaula albicostellus (Fernald, 1888), listed as a subspecies of Donacaula melinellus (Clemens, 1860) in Hodges et al. (1983) (Checklist), is informally raised to full species status in Martinez (2010) (dissertation). This treatment is accepted by Hayden & Scholtens (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) 2023).
