51a0552 – 2783   Olethreutes trepidulum (Heinrich, 1926)

LG - (cc) Alexandre Anctil
Larva and
Host Plants:
Viburnum
Similar Species:
  • 51a0552.1 Olethreutes betulana
  • Pinned specimens of related species. (Hint: select View by Region on the related species page.)
Synonymy:
  • trepidulum (Heinrich, 1926) (Exartema) REV. STAT.; TL: Hampton, N.H.
  • diallacta (Meyrick, 1932) (Argyroploce); TL: Maine.
Note: replacement name for zelleriana (Fernald, 1882), preoccupied in Argyroploce by zelleriana (Erschoff, 1874) (now placed in Clepsis)
  • nitidana of Zeller, 1875; (not Clemens, 1860) (Exartema) misid.
  • zelleriana (Fernald, 1882) (Eccopis) nom. nud. - MONA 1983: 2783; Lectotype: Maine.
Note: Lectotype designated by Miller (1970).
  • Taxonomic Notes: Olethreutes trepidulum (Heinrich, 1926) was formerly treated in Brown (2005) as a synonymy of O. diallacta (Meyrick, 1932). Gilligan & Brown (in Pohl & Nanz (eds.) (2023)) revised the status of trepidulum to full species, distinct from diallacta. In an apparent oversight, the authors regarded zelleriana as nomen nudum (no type or description). Fernald actually described zelleriana for the specimen misidentified in Zeller (1875) as nitidana (Clemens, 1860). That specimen was later designated as the lectotype of zelleriana by Miller. McDunnough (1955) confirmed that zelleriana and trepidulum (host plant = Viburnum (McDunnough 1942)) referred to the same species. But as noted by McDunnough, Fernald's description and illustration of zelleriana were not based on the type specimen; they were instead based on other specimens which referred to betulana (Heinrich, 1926), a Betula feeder.

Following the interpretations of McDunnough (1955) and Miller (1970), Powell (in Hodges et al. (1983)) listed the name zelleriana for the species which feeds on Viburnum (in a possible oversight, omitting without explanation the replacement name diallacta) and the name betulana for the species which feeds on Betula. MPG follows Powell but corrects the name zelleriana to trepidulum, the name which would appear to be the oldest valid synonym.
